Smarkets Review: The Fastest Growing Sports Exchange

SmarketsFounded in 2016 and named the 25th fastest growing company in the world by Financial Times in 2017, Smarkets is a sports betting exchange that has caught the market by the throat since appearing. The site offers lots of markets, very low 2% commission and plenty of other stuff for sports traders to look forward to.

Smarkets was founded by a small group of investors and their impressive growth clearly has something to do with them simply knowing what they are doing. The site is of course regulated by the UK Gambling Commission, which allows UK players to trade there without any fear of breaking the law, while international clients are also welcome and a license by the Malta Gambling Commission ensures they get a fair treatment.

One of the biggest upsides of Smarkets when compared to other popular sports exchanges is clearly the 2% commission charged on all trades, which is lower than any other significant competitor can offer, and which can really mean a lot for serious sports traders.

We set out to discover if Smarkets was really as good as advertised and created a full Smarkets review, covering the markets offered, quality of odds, customer support, payment methods and all other aspects of the exchange a trader might be interested in. Keep reading and find out how the exchange did in our Smarkets test.

When it comes to sports exchanges, you can know right at the start that you won’t get as many different markets as you would with a traditional sports betting site. This is true for Betfair Exchange UK and Smarkets alike. That said, Smarkets does a pretty good job of offering plenty of different sports and lots of markets on the most popular games.

Some of the more popular sports you can bet on at Smarkets include football, cricket, American football, tennis, baseball and of course horse racing exchange options, while the list also includes boxing, MMA, hockey, darts and others. In addition to the sports, traders can also trade bets on politics and novelty markets such as popular movie and singing contests, which is a nice addition.

Smarkets sportsbook review

Various sports and markets offered

The number of markets you can bet on is significantly more limited than you could find at a sportsbook, because not that many people care to bet on the side markets. For major events, you can still find a couple of dozen markets, including the most important ones, while lesser events may only offer the few main markets, which you should be used to if you prefer trading than betting in a traditional way.

The horse racing betting market only offer the winner market at this time, which some punters may think is poor, but more markets might be added in the future and it is clear that at this time Smarkets does not focus too heavily on horse racing.

If you are a regular to sports exchanges, than you probably know that the odds you can get with an exchange depend on how many people are backing which side, but in general the odds with exchanges tend to be a bit better than those you can get with the bookies.

Smarkets review

Top odds in the industry offered

This is also true with Smarkets, where our Smarkets review discovered that some extra points were available for many, even very popular upcoming matches. This is great news of course, as you are always looking to make that bit of extra money, but given the fact that the exchanges charge a commission, this does not always actually come out the way you imagined it.

That said, Smarkets charges the smallest commission of all the popular sports betting exchanges, at just 2%, which means the extra odds you get actually do work quite well for you.

When it comes to limits for trading on exchanges, it will really depend on how many other people are willing to bet against you. In order to get a large bet to actually stand, you will need to get enough people to pool together the matching money on the other side of your bet, which can be a bit tricky if you are looking to trade really high.

Still, hundreds of thousands of Pounds to get traded on the major markets for the popular football games, tennis tournaments and other big events, so you need not worry much about not getting enough action.

In fact, Smarkets liquidity pool can almost match that of Betfair and that certainly tells you a lot. Bets in tens of thousands are easily accepted at Smarkets, while small trades of just £10 can also be made to test the platform or see if you can build up a roll by outwitting your competitors.

Claim your £10 welcome bonus at Smarkets

The Smarkets bonus is not issued to the user when they sign up but rather after they have lost the amount of £10 in the trading platform. Once this happens, £10 is paid into your bonus balance, which can be used to make further trades. You will have to trade for at least the amount of your deposit within the promotional period in order to keep the cash.

The bonus terms are fairly simple and straight forward and as long as you don’t try to do anything out of line, you will get to keep the money. Additionally, Smarkets often throws extra cash and 0% commission promotions at its users, adding even more value to an already solid sports exchange.

The Smarkets website is quite easy to use and navigate and it has very little clutter in it. As we were creating this Smarkets sportsbook review, we went into the site from both the mobile phone and a desktop computer and in both instances the site looked more mobile friendly than most bookmaker sites out there.

The dropdown menu on the left hand side allows for quick browsing through the available sports and when not being used, it is hidden from view, adding extra space for the rest of the elements. On the right side, you will find the popular upcoming events, while the main part of the site offers you ready odds for the top markets currently being bet on, including the live markets.

Smarkets reviewEasily trade your bets on ongoing matches

The website is designed in black, white and tones of grey for top contrast. Smarkets also does not offer too many distractions and the site is very much oriented toward serious sports trading as opposed to casual sports betting.

Overall, the design and usability of the site are top notch as Smarkets gives you a quick and easy way to get your trades in.

All our sports betting site reviews include some contact with the customer service and while making this Smarkets review, we also went ahead and gave the site a phone call and contacted their customer support agents via Smarkets live chat.

Smarkets bookmaker review

Smarkets offers very plain and serious support options

The live chat is available around the clock and is probably the best way for you to get a hold of the site’s representatives. The telephone lines are open between 9am and midnight, giving you plenty of time to contact the exchange.

As far as the quality of service goes, the agents at the support offices appear to be well trained at dealing with most common situations, while a more serious issue may be sent to particular departments for solution, in which case you may have to wait for an email solution to your issue.

Unlike many bookmakers who will accept payments via many obscure payment processors, Smarkets deals only with the most serious of them, so the list of deposit methods is a bit short. You can make your deposits using MasterCard, Visa and Maestro cards as well as Skrill and NETELLER and of course a direct bank transfer. The same payment methods can be used to release your funds upon requesting a cashout and that’s really it.

While the site may lack a bit in the number of payment options, most serious traders won’t mind as these methods are everyone’s favourite nowadays anyway. Of course, the Skrill and NETELLER deposits don’t count towards the promotional offers, so keep this in mind.

We did a deposit and a cashout from the site during our Smarkets test and we had a great result as our Visa deposit was instant and our cashout was quickly released within less than 8 hours from requesting, which is great response time for any bookie.

Like any good sports trading site out there, Smarkets owners made sure that they get licenses from the appropriate bodies before opening shop. The site is fully licensed by both the Malta Gaming Authority and the UK Gambling Commission, the two most prominent licensing bodies in the industry.

When it comes to player security, the site uses modern technologies such as the SSL Certificates and 128 Bit Encryptions to keep player data safe, so you need not worry about your identity or your money being stolen.

All in all, our Smarkets review showed that the site offers a high standard of player security, and even a quick Google search will show you that very few people have every had any security issues with Smarkets, which is always a good sign.

If you are looking to make your trades from your mobile phone or tablet, you are in luck. While Smarkets does not offer any downloadable Smarkets app, their website is fully responsive and very mobile friendly.

Even the desktop version of the site looks like it was made for mobile phones and Smarkets may actually be better on the phone than the PC. The website can be accessed from all popular mobile browsers on Android and Apple devices and basically any browser you can have on a modern mobile device.

We accessed the site from several mobile phones during this Smarkets review and had positive results in every case, with the site running smoothly and with no glitches and trades being made very quickly. If you are looking for a mobile trading platform with no clutter and a hands-on approach, Smarkets is definitely your site.

The one area where Smarkets definitely loses the race with its competitors is the extras. Unlike many other sites that offer extra gambling products, statistics, news and live scores, the site actually only offers the Smarkets betting exchange with no extras whatsoever.

You will not have access to any casino, poker or classic sportsbook from the Smarkets site, and looking around the menus to find stats and previous results of the teams you are looking to bet on will be to no avail. No Smarkets cash out option is available either.

This is all due to the fact that Smarkets is targeted towards the very serious sports trading aficionados who don’t really care for this stuff and who use more professional and extensive stats and results services than those that a bookie would ever offer on their site.

Whether we will see other products from Smarkets in the future remains a mystery, but at this time, the company seems very dedicated to sticking with what they do best, sports trading.

Conclusion: Fast Growing and Highly Professional Exchange 97.4 of 100

With industry leading Smarkets commission of just 2%, plenty of sports and markets to bet on and a highly professional and mobile friendly website, Smarkets definitely stands at the very top of the sports betting exchange industry.

The site offers great services and plenty of liquidity but is focused more towards the professional and serious sports traders and less towards casual punters. Those punters who don’t want a shiny site with a lot of clutter, but are simply looking for best value on their bets and a big pool of people willing to bet against them will find their home at Smarkets. If you fall into this category, sign up today and start trading at one of the fastest growing sports exchanges in the world.
